It’s the beginning of October here in Pennsylvania. For me that means cool, crisp weather, breathtakingly beautiful scenery (the rolling hills and colorful trees in Pennsylvania are SOgorgeous this time of year!), pumpkin pie, hoodies, blankets and boots. But for most of the guys in my life, October means one thing: hunting season.

And for my husband Zach, hunting season means it’s beard time. Growing a beard each year is some sort of manly ritual with his hunting friends. They say a beard helps them hunt better (huh?? I never really understood that one) and helps keep them warm (I do understand that one).

But truth be told, I’ve never been a beard loving kind of gal. I mostly prefer a clean shaven face or even better yet, a tiny bit of stubble (stubble = sexy in my book).

To me, beards were itchy and coarse. And don’t even get me started on unkept beards. I don’t like unkept beards at all.

But I have come around! Well….not on the unkept beard. However, I’ve grown to actually like Zach’s hunting beard. Especially now that he’s learned the secret to keeping his beard nice and soft and since he’s so meticulous about keeping it well groomed.

He says the secret to hissoft and groomed beard is beard oil. Plus the specific ingredients in this beard oil recipe keep his skin healthy and clear duringthe cooler months.

DIY Beard Oil

In prior years, Zach purchased various beard oils from different companies. But this year he said he wanted to make his own homemade beard oil because he wasn’t entirely satisfied (mainly with the scents) and he thought there was a possibility that he could do better.

I said go for it! I answered a few of his questions since I’m usually the DIY expert, but then sat back and enjoyed watching him do his thing trying to createthe perfect beard oil recipe complete with the perfect manly scent.

He tested a bunch of different facial oils and essential oil blends to come up with the perfect, easy beard oil recipe that smells AMAZING.

Beard Oil Ingredient Health Benefits

Avocado oil

Avocado oil is the base oil that made his top pickfor this beard oil recipe. He said it feels very lightweight on the skin, absorbs quickly and easily andisn’t too greasy like some of the other beard oils he’s tried. And I say that avocado oil is an especially goodchoice because it’sabsolutely wonderful for skin and hair health. Avocado oil is at the top of the list offoods containing the most amount of Vitamin E, making it exceptional for healthy skin and hair. We like using THIS avocado oil.

And the scent he formulated? Seriously, it’s the best manly essential oil blend I’ve smelled!

He was very picky about getting the scent just right and literally tried about 100different combinations. What can I say….the man is thorough. My whole house smelled pretty crazy for a couple of days, but he was having so much fun so I didn’t stop him.

The scent he created is a little woodsy, a little earthy and so, so sexy! It’s also mild and not at all overpowering. I love it as much as he does. He’s even thinking about making his own cologne spray 🙂

He used a blend of vetiver, fir needle and cedarwood essential oils. Not only do those essential oils smell so sexy and manly when blended together, but they are filled with some pretty cool health promoting properties:

Vetiver essential oil

Vetiver is earthy and grounding. Many peoplewith ADHD report overwhelming success with vetiver (including my niece – it’s been a lifesaver for her!). It’s also one of the best oils for scars and anti-aging! We use THIS one.

Fir needle essential oil

Fir needle smells like the great outdoors. It has soothing, stress relieving properties and is especially great for those prone toallergies, congestion and respiratory issues. It helps open airways for open, clear breathing. We like THIS one.

Cedarwoodessential oil

Cedarwood is one of the top essential oilsfor skin and hair health. It stimulates healthy hair growth, eliminatesdry, flaky skin and scalp and helps relieve acne. THIS variety of Cedarwood is the one we use (we think it smells the best out of all the different Cedarwood varieties).
