A

Aesthetic Grievance (pg. 30): Ugly, or going against the principles of a particular artistic or architectural design scheme.

Said by 3 when discussing the greenhouse: “–it was an aesthetic grievance?” (pg. 30).

Aldo (pg. 94): A Canadian-Moroccan retail chain company that sells shoes and accessories.

Angel of Death (pg. 57, 96): Many religions refer to at least one angel as the embodiment of death. In Judeo-Christian theology, angels of death – such as Michael, Gabriel, Sammael, and Sariel – are associated with Satan. In Islam theology, Azrael is named as the Angel of Death.

Said by 6 as she reflects on morality and death: “The Angel of Death moving over the town” (pg. 57).

B

Bessarion Station (pg. 81): A station on the TTC located at the intersection between Sheppard Avenue East and the cross-streets of Bessarion Road and Burbank Drive. Aside from Ellesmere Station, Bessarion Station is the least used station in the TTC network.

Said by 2: “Yo, man, death is Bessarion Station” (pg. 81).

Black Death (pg. 37): An epidemic of bubonic plague that killed fifty million people in Europe between 1346-53. This disease was caused by a bacterium that circulates among wild rodents when a high population lives together; infected black rats and rat fleas in Europe are responsible for transmitting the disease to humans. Victims of this plague typically started feeling ill 3-5 days after being infected, developing swollen lymph glands, fever, and other flu-like symptoms. 80% died in another 3-5 days. Many developed dark patches on their skin, which is likely where this sickness got its name.

Bobolink (pg. 65, 100):A species of songbird that lives in North American tallgrass prairies and hayfields. It is currently threatened, most likely because of modern hay production practises, but not yet endangered. More information can be found here.

Bridal Whites (pg. 32): A type of white flower commonly used as decorations at weddings.More information can be found here.

C

C. difficile (pg. 81, 85):A bacterium that can potentially cause life-threatening inflammation of the colon. Infection is associated with long-term health care facilities and antibiotics, but spores from the bacteria can quickly spread to food, surfaces, and objects, and be easily ingested anywhere.

Cineplex (pg. 65, 66): A Canadian media entertainment company known for being the largest film exhibitor in the country.

Concord (pg. 34):A suburban neighbourhood in Vaughan. According to the 2001 consensus, there are 8,255 inhabitants in Concord and Carrville combined.

9 refers to being built in “the quiet town of Concord” (pg. 34).

Concord Floral (pg. 7, etc): An abandoned greenhouse located in Vaughan, Ontario. More information can be found here.

Craigslist (pg. 47):A classified advertisem*nts website often stylized as craiglist. Users can advertise housing, employment, goods, romance, and sexual opportunities.

Said by 1: “I take a few co*ck pics and post them on Craigslist” (pg. 47).

Crested Moss (pg. 27):A type of pink rose that blooms in the spring and summer.More information can be found here.

Cul-de-sac (pg. 24):A street that is closed at one end.

D

Decameron, the (pg. 6, etc): A 14th century allegory written by Giovanni Boccaccio during the early Italian Renaissance about ten teenagers who flee from plague-ridden Florence to an ornate countryside villa. More information can be found here.

Don Watershed (pg. 65):An urbanized watershed with 1.2 million inhabitants around the Don River, which flows from the Oak Ridges Moraine to Lake Ontario. Attempts are currently being made to revitalize the landscape after it has suffered the effects of severe long-term pollution, such as habitat protection.

Drip-line Irrigation (pg. 33): A watering system allowing water to drip slowly to the roots of plants in order to save water and fertilizer.

Facebooking (pg. 51): The activity of going on Facebook, an online social media website.

Fecal Transplant (pg. 85):The act of transferring a healthy donor’s feces into the gastrointestinal tract of one suffering from C. difficile in hopes of treating the condition.

Fire Spinners (pg. 39):Performers that integrate fire into dances, skits, and theatrical rituals.

Flashlight App (pg. 13):A function cellphones have that allow them to emit light for the purpose of seeing in the dark, as a traditional flashlight would do.

Florence (pg. 6, 37):A city in Italy commonly credited as being the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance. Giovanni Boccaccio lived in Florence as it was struck with the Black Plague, which served as his inspiration for The Decameron.

G

Giovanni Boccaccio (pg. 37): The author of The Decameron. See “Decameron, the” for more information.

Glencairn (pg. 34):

  1. A neighbourhood in Toronto, Ontario located along Glencairn Avenue.
  2. A TTC Station located in the median of Allen Road at Glencairn Avenue.

Said by 9: “When [the Rosenbergs] immigrated to Toronto they reopened their flower shop / a bustling spot around Glencairn” (pg. 33-34).

Golden Fantasies (pg. 32):A type of flower.More information can be found here.

Google Maps (pg. 23):A web mapping service created by Google equipped with satellite imagery, street maps, and information about traffic conditions.

Grand Mall (pg. 92, 93):A strip of outlet stores in Concord Floral. Based on a lack of research findings, Grand Mall is most likely fictional. It may have been inspired by Vaughan Mills, an outlet mall in Vaughan.

Grand Mall Seizure (pg. 94): A Grand Mal seizure is a severe type of seizure that involves violent muscle contractions and a loss of consciousness caused by abnormal neurological electrical activity. Just Joey (1) presumably misheard his 5th grade teacher describe his friend’s seizure as a “Grand Mall” seizure, after Concord Floral’s Grand Mall.

Said by 1: “Our teacher described it to us the next day as a ‘Grand Mall’ seizure” (pg. 94).

GTA (pg. 34):The Greater Toronto Area, which consists of Toronto and the adjacent regions of Halton, Peel, York (where Vaughan, the setting of Concord Floral, is located), and Durham.

Said by 9: “But over the years I grew into the largest rose supplier in the GTA” (pg. 34).

H

Himalayan Musk (pg. 32):A light pink type of rambling rose bush.More information can be found here.

Hydroponic lights (pg. 33):An artificial light source designed to help plants grow without soil.

I

iPhone (pg. 17, 115):A brand of smartphones designed and marketed by Apple Inc.

J

Joint (pg. 9):A rolled marijuana cigarette. Users typically hand-roll joints from paper. Also referred to as a J (pg. 9, 120) and weed (pg. 11) throughout the play.

Jonesing (pg. 4):An informal verb meaning to crave something.

Said by 1 (about Rolo McFlurries): “But when you’re jonesing for a McFlurry–” (pg. 4).

Lorde (pg. 63):A recently teenage singer-songwriter and record producer from New Zealand, best known for her hit single “Royals.”

Said by 6 (to 5): “Where’s the Lorde Calendar I gave you?” (pg. 63).

M

McDonald’s (pg. 4):An American fast food restaurant chain.

McFlurry (pg. 4):A type of milkshake sold by McDonalds. A Rolo McFlurry (pg. 5) is a specific type of McFlurry with caramel and milk chocolate.

Medieval Chorus (pg. 3):Choral music is intended to be sung by an ensemble and was a popular form of entertainment and religious ritual during the Middle Ages. For example, the rondeau involved a lead singer singing verses and a small choir singing the refrain. The 14th century saw choral music evolve into more polyphonic arrangements with multiple singers and melodies. Many medieval choral pieces were meant to be sung a capella (without musical accompaniment).

Merk (pg. 76):A slang term meaning to assault, kill, beat, or insult a person or object.

Said by 8 (about 6): “She f*cking merked that girl” (pg. 76).

Milton (pg. 39):John Milton (1608-1674) was an English poet best known for writing Paradise Lost, an epic that retells Adam and Eve’s expulsion from Eden.

Naturopaths (pg. 39):Those who believe in, either as patients or as healers, natural treatments to disease, such as alternative medicines and electrotherapy.

Nevada Desert (pg. 81):An arid desert region in Nevada, the United States.

NIMBY (pg. 65):An abbreviation for Not In My Backyard. A person who is a NIMBYobjects to potentially dangerous developments in his/her/their neighbourhood, such as hazardous waste facilities, but does not object to those same developments occurring elsewhere.

Said by 3: “I’m not a NIMBY” (pg. 65).

O

Old Navy (pg. 94):An American clothing and accessories retail organization owned by Gap Inc.

P

Pankow (pg. 33):A borough in Berlin, Germany. Pankow used to home Schönholzer Heide, a popular amusem*nt park in the 19th century that was turned into a labour camp during WWII. After the war, the Soviet Memorial was built in Pankow, enclosing a graveyard for the 350 local citizens that died during the Battle of Berlin in 1945 and the at least 100 prisoners that perished in Schönholzer Heide.

Reaching (pg. 113):An informal synonym for coming, attending, or arriving.

Said by 5 (to 10): “Are you reaching the party tonight?”

Robert Pattinson (pg. 35):An English actor best known for his roles as Cedric Diggory inHarry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005) and Edward Cullen in the Twilight series (2008-2012).

Scourge (pg. 27):An entity or phenomenon that causes sickness or catastrophe.

1 (referring to his mother): “She said [Concord Floral] was a scourge” (pg. 27).

SUV (pg. 105):An abbreviation for Sport Utility Vehicle or Suburban Utility Vehicle. An SUV is categorized as a truck, but is commonly operated as a family vehicle.

T

Tetanus (pg. 121):A potentially life-threatening infectious disease, the bacteria of which typically enters the body through a puncture wound, such as one caused by stepping on glass or nails.

Thirsty (pg. 8): A slang term for sexual desire.

Said by 6 (to 5): “I know you’re thirsty for him” (pg. 8).

Tim Hortons (pg. 26): A Canadian multinational fast food restaurant.

Toronto (pg. 23, 33):The most populated metropolis in Canada and the capital of Ontario. As of 2016, Toronto has a population of 2,731,571 people.

Trellises (pg. 33):Lattices used as a support during plant growth.

Trent (pg. 39): Trent University is a public liberal arts- and science-focused post-secondary institution in Peterborough, Ontario with a satellite campus in Oshawa.

Trotto danza (pg. 38): A piece of 14th century Italian dance music.

TTC (pg. 47): An abbreviation for the Toronto Transit Commission, which is a public transport agency that operates, subways, buses, streetcars, and paratransit services within Toronto.

U

Vaughan (pg. 47):A city in Ontario, Canada, located in the region of York. It was Canada’s fastest-growing city between 1996 and 2006. Vaughan is the fifth-largest city in the GTA and, as of 2016, has a population of 306,233 people.

Villa (pg. 6, 37):An estate in the country.

Vitaminwater (pg. 66):Water with added vitamins and nutrients.

W

Wallahi:An Arabic phrase meaning “I swear to Allah.”

War (pg. 33):Presumably an allusion to WWII. For more information, see “Pankow.

Said by 9: “[Esther and David Rosenberg] survived the war but their daughters didn’t” (pg. 33).

Whitman (pg. 39):Walt Whitman (1819-1892) was an American poet best known for his self-published poetry collection, Leaves of Grass.
