There’s a reason most multivitamins come in gummy form- kids LOVE gummies! The problem is store-bought versions are full of artificial flavors, colors, and loaded with sugar. In some cases, even high fructose corn syrup. You definitely don’t want that in your kid’s diet!

The good news is you can easily make your own gummies at home!

Getting your daily dose of nutrients is important all of the time. However, between a virus that just won’t quit and the seemingly never-ending parade of nerve-wracking events hitting us in 2020, our bodies need the right amount of vitamins and minerals now more than ever. That goes for both for kids and adults.

Making your own healthier gummies is a much better alternative to store-bought candy. The best part? Without adding anything aside from the main ingredients, they’re little powerhouses of essential nutrients. Let’s check out the basics, then we’ll go over some tips, tricks, and other ingredients that you can add to give them an even healthier kick.

Just a couple quick notes before we start. First, none of this is meant to be as medical advice. If your doctor or pediatrician prescribes a specific vitamin (or vitamin dosage), please don’t try to swap it out with these homemade gummy multivitamins. Instead, ask for the least “artificial” form possible.

Also, while these gummies are naturally packed with essential nutrients, they don’t have the same “mega-dose” you’ll find in certain supplements. For the average healthy child (and adult), that’s actually a good thing! However, for those dealing with certain vitamin deficiencies, stick with your doctor’s recommendations.

What are the main ingredients in these healthy homemade gummies?

For this how to make your own chewable gummy multivitamins tutorial, I used plain grass-fed gelatinHow To Make Your Own Chewable Gummy Multivitamins (3). The health benefits of collagen are amazing. It helps regulate our metabolism, has anti-inflammatory properties, strengthens hair and nails, and regulates hormones. Gelatin is also known to improve digestion.

If you’re a vegetarian or vegan, there are some good natural gelatin alternatives. However, keep in mind that these alternatives will likely alter the overall consistency of your gummies. Also, they won’t really do much- if anything- to boost your collagen production.

The other main ingredients are fruits and veggies. That’s it! With just three basic ingredients, you’ll have real, nutritious, and full of vitamins gummies. Just remember that most store-bought multivitamins are made synthetically. Your body absorbs nutrients way better if they come from natural sources.

From there, all that’s left to do is choose your favorite flavor combinations. If you need ideas you can see my Healthy Homemade Gummies recipe, or my How To Make Perfect Green Smoothies For Kids Tutorial. You will find many recipe ideas for your gummy multivitamins.

How to squeeze the most nutrients out of your fruits and veggies

Juicing or blending your fruits and veggies is the best way to really get those nutrients to make your own multivitamins. One of the reasons juicing is so popular is because the final product contains a high concentration of vitamins and minerals. You will lose some of the fiber content, though, so these chewable gummy multivitamins aren’t a good alternative to fiber supplements.

Tips & Tricks for Making Your Own Chewable Gummy Multivitamins

Before we check out the recipe itself, let’s just quickly go over some tips and tricks that will help you make the best chewable gummy multivitamin possible.

Experiment with different base ingredient combinations

Your base is your juice or smoothie blend, so get creative! I like to make my gummies using coconut water and then my favorite fruits and veggies. Try different flavors and combinations for different colors. I use 2 cups of liquid and 1 1/2 cups of fruits/veggies.

If you need a sweetener, make sure it’s natural

While some fruit and vegetable combinations are sweet enough on their own, others may need a little bit more sweetness. In that case, make sure you stick with something natural. You don’t want to toss processed sugar in there, that defeats the whole purpose of making your own gummies.

I like to use raw honeyHow To Make Your Own Chewable Gummy Multivitamins (5) or maple syrupHow To Make Your Own Chewable Gummy Multivitamins (6) if my juice or smoothie blend is not too sweet. It is totally up to you and the flavor combination you are using. When I blend veggies I always like to add a teaspoon or two.

Get creative to give your gummies more color

For red gummies try strawberries, beets, and/or raspberries. For orange gummies, try citrus fruits like mandarins or oranges. You can make your own Vitamin C gummies too!Blueberries and blackberries are perfect for making a deep blue/purple gummy.Use your imagination and favorite fruits and veggies and make your gummy vitamins different each time!

At this point, you’ll have a wonderful healthier alternative to gummy candy. They’re naturally loaded with the vitamins and minerals found in the fruits and veggies that you used. However, if you’re looking for a way to make something more like a better alternative to those “once a day” gummy vitamins, you’ll have to go a bit farther.

Use superfoods to boost the nutrients in your gummies

You can add more nutrition with supplements and really make these gummies your super multivitamins. First, let’s look at some “superfoods” that you can add to boost the nutrients while still preserving the “candy-alternative” quality. In other words, adding these ingredients won’t turn it something that you can only safely take one of each day.

Coconut oil: Add 1 teaspoon. Coconut oilHow To Make Your Own Chewable Gummy Multivitamins (8) is an excellent source of good fat.Kids can benefit from coconut oil’s antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Chia seeds:Add 1 tablespoon. For a boost of fiber, omega’s 3 and 6. Chia seedsHow To Make Your Own Chewable Gummy Multivitamins (9) are also an excellent source of easily digestible plant based protein.

Acai Powder: Add the recommended daily dosage. Acai powderHow To Make Your Own Chewable Gummy Multivitamins (10) can supply your kids of essential amino acids, high dietary fiber, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids that are good for brain and eyesight development. Better yet, add actual acai berries to your blend and you don’t have to worry about dealing with powders at all. How To Make Your Own Chewable Gummy Multivitamins (11)

If you want to make your gummies into more of a “once daily” multivitamin, the next section is for you. Please talk to your doctor first, though. With vitamins and minerals, there really is such a thing as “too much of a good thing.”

Supplements to add to create a “one a day” type gummy vitamins

I highly recommend grabbing the liquid versions of these supplements whenever possible. It just makes it easier to control the dosage. If liquids aren’t available, go with powdered forms, followed by capsules (you can break them open and use the powder). Tablets are my last choice because they’re a pain to grind up, and they have a lot more extra fillers in them.

Vitamin C

You can buy organic vitamin C drops and add them to your homemade gummies for an extra boost for your immune system. The scientific community can’t seem to decide if taking C really helps prevent a cold or if it’s a myth (there are supporting studies for both sides of the debate). However, if you stick with recommended daily doses and don’t go overboard, it really is a “can’t hurt to try” situation. Vitamin C has so many other health benefits that make it worth adding.

Vitamin D

While the jury is still out on whether taking most vitamins and supplements really helps prevent or lessen the impact of COVID, Vitamin D has a bit more scientific backing. According to Harvard Medical School, “Vitamin D may protect against COVID-19 in two ways. First, it may help boost our bodies’ natural defense against viruses and bacteria. Second, it may help prevent an exaggerated inflammatory response, which has been shown to contribute to severe illness in some people with COVID-19.”

Garden of Life has a great liquid vitamin D, but it is flavored (naturally). So, keep that in mind if you decide to use it in your homemade gummies.

Zinc

Zinc is another fabulous immune booster that’s backed by science. In terms of COVID, studies show that zinc deficiencies are actually linked to “poorer outcomes. However, go easy on this one and really stick to the RDA. Too much zinc can cause stomach upset, headaches, flu-like symptoms and more. If there was ever a time we didn’t want to feel flu-like symptoms, it’s definitely now!

Probiotics

ProbioticsHow To Make Your Own Chewable Gummy Multivitamins (13) help with digestion, nutrient absorption, and form the front line of our immune defense. Again, stick to the recommended daily amount. While you can’t really overdose on them to the point of death, too much can definitely cause some nasty side effects.

I promise this is a very easy recipe and you will be so happy with the results. I recently bought this gummy bear moldHow To Make Your Own Chewable Gummy Multivitamins (14) and I am in love. The gummies are the perfect size for my kids and it is so easy to clean and use.

You can also make ice pops, smoothies, and even Jello with your blend leftovers. When I get really inspired, I make several blends and I have many snacks for my kids for the entire week! Description

Organic, full of nutrition homemade natural multivitamins. For kids and adults.

Scale

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup juice (your favorite juice/smoothie flavors)
  • 2 tablespoons plain grass-fed gelatin

Instructions

  1. Pour juice into a small-medium saucepan. Sprinkle the gelatin over the top and let sit for just a few minutes until it starts to “bloom”. Iit will get wrinkly looking on the surface and all of the white powder from the gelatin will absorb into the liquid. Mix well.
  2. Then place the saucepan over medium heat on the stove. Let the liquid warm, but don’t let it boil. You want all of the gelatin to dissolve and turn thin and runny. I will be grainy at the beginning, but after a couple of minutes in the heat it should dissolve completely. Make sure you stir it well.
  3. Put the liquid in a little cup or jar, (I use my measuring cup), and then into your molds.
  4. Refrigerate for 2-3 hours.
  5. Remove from molds. They pop right out!
  6. Store in a mason jar or closed container in the refrigerator. They last for about 2 weeks.
