Ensure a healthy cannabis marketplace by supporting patient advocacy! As a board member of Americans for Safe Access (ASA), I have pledged to ensure that ASA has the funding needed to continue this fight and I am asking you, my cannabis network, to join me in these efforts and add AMERICANS FOR SAFE ACCESS to Your End of Year Giving List! You may not be aware that there is a looming threat to our evolution posed by insufficient safety protocols. Most cannabis consumers don’t realize the risks contaminants and adulterants can pose to their health and, unfortunately, most policymakers don’t either. This is especially concerning for patients who are at higher risk of adverse outcomes and ongoing exposure.I am extremely concerned when I think of the challenges that face patients navigating cannabis markets to find safe medicines and I am thankful that ASA is working to address issues such as: ·While research may be easier to conduct than a decade ago, there are no standardized, evidence-based products available nationally, making it difficult (if not impossible) for physicians to recommend.·Though packaging and labeling of cannabis has improved, an at risk patient can only see what is communicated on the packaging. How is one to easily know what was and wasn’t tested under a particular state’s regulations? What about whether the cannabinoids were synthetically versus naturally extracted? ·Hemp derived products are sold in countless locations (gas stations, convenience stores, supermarkets and more) and are not as regulated as cannabis products sold in dispensaries. In early 2023, the FDA concluded that the current frameworks for foods and supplements are inappropriate for cannabis and requested that Congress take this on. We need federal regulation so that patients can feel confident about the safety of the cannabis products they are purchasing, regardless of where it was purchased or in which state it was purchased. Most people think that with adult use legalization the battle for medical cannabis patients is over. WRONG. The truth is adult use programs fail to address patient needs;states have fulfilled their roles as laboratories for democracy, and what patients need is federal action! ASA is fighting for the creation of a national medical cannabis program that will integrate cannabis treatments into US healthcare systems making cannabis medicines accessible, safe, & affordable for all who need it. Let’s make sure ASA can win this fight! CELEBRATE CANNABIS BY CONTINUING THE FIGHT FOR PATIENTS! As a community,we tend focus on statistics like the number of states with recreational cannabis programs or the revenue generated by cannabis businesses, but as a board member of Americans for Safe Access (ASA), I have learned that these exciting milestones don’t translate to better access for patients. This is extremely concerning to me because I know that all the successes we enjoy -- including businesses building revenue from the cannabis marketplace -- is because of patients and the work of organizations like ASA. In fact, ASA has worked tirelessly to overcome political, social, and legal barriers to improve access to medical cannabis for patients & researchers since 2002! Most people think that with the advent of adult use legalization that the battle for medical cannabis patients is over. WRONG. The truth is adult use programs fail to address patient needs. While states have fulfilled their roles as laboratories for democracy, what patients need is federal action! I have pledged to ensure that ASA has the funding needed to continue this fight and I am asking you, my cannabis network to join me in these efforts and add AMERICANS FOR SAFE ACCESS to Your End of Year Giving List! https://lnkd.in/gzmfdfj2Facts that inspire me to keep up of the fight for the millions of patients who still don’t have access: ·Patients who work for or have contracts with federal government, patients who live in section 8 housing, veterans receiving care from the VA, and individuals in hospitals or hospice programs that depend on federal funds cannot use cannabis, even if it is legal in their state. ·Many states allow localities to refuse retail and/or delivery sales – creating large deserts where a patient must drive for miles (assuming they can drive and have a car…)·Adult use programs do not provide access to patients under the age of 21. ·Left up to the states, patients must navigate a patchwork of laws & regulations with some access to medical cannabis in 48 states, including 10 states that restrict access to CBD or low THC products only. ·Patients must pay for doctor visits, medical cannabis iD cards, & cannabis products out of pocket. ·Civil protections for employment & parental rights are not extended to adult use consumers. ASA is fighting for the creation of a national medical cannabis program that will integrate cannabis treatments into US healthcare systems making cannabis medicines accessible, safe, & affordable for all who need it. Let’s make sure ASA can win this fight! Do Patient Advocates Make a Difference? Without question. Ideally they would always make a positive difference, but more recently I’ve seen more conflicted organizations. While they’ve been in action since the 1950s, such organizations started affecting me directly in the 1970s, when DES Action USA was started. The pioneers who founded DES Action changed laws and worked to develop research that continued for 40 years. They did that and more, importantly, independently from pharmaceutical funding.More recently, patient advocacy groups propelled by pharmaceutical funding aren't necessarily representing the patient. A few years ago, the Even the Score campaign - backed by pharmaceutical funding - pushed through a “female Viagra” drug no one wanted. Too many of the patient advocacy groups who speak publicly at national levels receive financial support from pharma. Individuals may believe in an organization without realizing that its policy can be influenced by this funding. The money from pharma allows the patient advocacy groups to take action. But sometimes, this means NOT putting their members’ interests first.I urge you to look closely at where funding comes from before you donate to or volunteer for a patient organization. If support comes from pharmaceutical companies, then that funding comes at a great cost. What criteria do you use to vet a nonprofit? #pharmaceutical#drugs#nonprofitThe Hastings CenterNational Council of Women's Organizations

There are high-impact innovations happening in the public sector, silently, and all the time. The PDMP – Prescription Drug Monitoring Program, is one such innovation. In fact, I reckon, it might end up being one of the most effective public policy instruments in mitigating the opioid crisis. In a BMJ opinion piece by Iva Parvanova,Arianna Gentilini, Huseyin Naci from the Department, and Jonathan Cushing, the authors suggest ways to mitigate patient organizations/industry conflicts of interest in NICE drug appraisals after the Novo Nordisk Wegovy case:➡️ Comprehensive COI disclosure about the financial reliance of patient groups on industry needs to be juxtaposed with timely, accurate and detailed charity income data to maintain transparency and ensure credibility. ➡️Increased timeframe of COI disclosure to more than 12 months to avoid overlooking historical commercial ties. ➡️ Implementation of strategy that enables participation from a broader range of patient groups to circumvent concerns around over-representation and reduce industry sponsorship bias.
